Based
on the ever-popular children's' novel by Johanna Spyri, "Heidi"
follows
the adventures of an indomitable young girl,
forced to move to her grandfather's
hovel high up in the Swiss Alps, where she she
surprises all by settling in to a
firm friendship, not only with her somewhat grouchy
relative, but also with a new
friend Peter, the goat-herder. But alas, Heidi's
scheming Aunt has other plans
for her, and Heidi is dragged away to the city.
Here she befriends Clara who
is wheelchair-bound, and through their friendship,
Clara gains the courage to
walk again. Needless to say, Auntie's plans
crumble around her, and it all ends
happily ever after for our heroine...
Since it was first published in 1880, "Heidi"
has sold more than 100million
copies around the world, in 50 different languages,
and there have been
numerous live-action and animated adaptations.
Telemagination's version
was made for $4.5m and is their very
first foray into feature animation.
Previous tv credits have included those ever-popular
Telebugs, and the
EBU-funded series 'Noah's Island' and The
Animals of Farthing Wood.
The film is a hand-drawn 2D affair directed
by Telemagination's Alan Simpson,
whose director credits include the third series
of 'Farthing Wood' and the
Bafta-nominated and Annecy-winning Christmas special
'The Last Polar Bear'.
In this version, Christopher Plummer voices
Heidi's cantankerous Grandfather.
In the UK, "Heidi" was released
straight to video/DVD on 26th September 2005.
But our European neighbours have been more
fortunate. A German cinema
release has been scheduled for December 2005...
