A
redoubtable retrospective!
(11.11.11)

If you're a fan of the late and great John Ryan, you
really must
reserve a date in your diary for a brand new retrospective
art
exhibition being held in his home town of Rye this Winter.
"John Ryan - A Retrospective" is running at
Rye Art Gallery,
from 19th November, and it will feature around 60 of
his many and
varied works, including pieces from Captain
Pugwash, Harris
Tweed, Lettice Leefe, Sir
Prancelot, Mary, Mungo
& Midge,
and cartoons from the Catholic Herald, as curated by
his
daughter Isabel.

Ah, you know, it would be just great if there was a big glossy
coffee book available, collating this amazing body of
work into
a volume to savour. Or a standalone Captain Pugwash
tome,
bringing all of those seafaring tales together with
a little history
behind the strips and stories, and its development over
the
years. Oh, and then a properly remastered DVD or blu-ray
release for those three fantastic caption series, with
interviews
and extras - *sigh*
Well, we can all dream. And whilst we wait for these
imaginery
things to materialise there's this exhibition, which
is quite tangible
and real. John
Ryan - A Retrospective will be open from 2pm,
19th November 2011 to 12th February 2012 in the Stormont
Studio,
Rye Art Gallery, 107 Rye High Street, Rye, East Sussex. The
Stormont Studio itself is open Thursdays to Sundays, and
you
can check 01797 222433 for up-to-date seasonal opening hours.
