A
Dandy exhibition (24.10.12)

If
you're in central London in the run up to Christmas, you might
want to make your way to our friends at The
Cartoon Museum
in
Little Russell Street. They're currently running a rather
dandy
exhibition...
"The Dandy: 75 Years of Biffs, Bangs and Banana Skins"
celebrates
the artists behind many of the comic's classic strips,
and the
characters they've brought to life for DC Thomson & Co.
over the
decades. The exhibition chronicles the history of the comic,
from its
launch on 4th December 1937, through its post-war regeneration,
right up to its forthcoming milestone edition, and its realignment
as
a digital publication. There's a stack of background info
to share here,
and needless tosays, lots and lots of glorious,
original strips and
associated artworks to see, by the likes of Dudley D Watkins,
Robert Nixon, Nigel Parkinson, Charlie Grigg, and more.
"The Dandy" has been making headlines everywhichway
in recent
weeks, as the press have picked up on its imminent anniversary
and
abrupt cancellation. And there's been much debate about
its past,
present and future contribution to our comics culture.
So this
retrospective is both timely and poignant.
And if the two examples beow this article are anything
to go by,
we're in for a treat. Robet Nixon's panto artwork is fantastically
busy
and sunshine bright. And as for Dan tackling the Hun
- well - what
a propganda-packed contrast that is!
"The Dandy: 75 Years of Biffs, Bangs and Banana Skins"
is at
The Cartoon Museum, 35 Little Russell Street, London
WC1A 2HH
from 24th October to 24th December 2012.
